BASE CAMP Buffalo Cove is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina at the trickling head waters of the Yadkin River. Base Camp is a secluded 200-acre valley just 12 miles south of Blowing Rock. Upon exploration you might find crystal clear springs & creeks, outstanding rock formations, and an extremely diverse population of plants and animals.
In addition to the wild beauty of base camp, there are a handful of human-made structures and trails that add to the camp lifestyle including numerous paths and trails through the wild land, a swimming pond, a large organic garden and several wildflower and culinary herb patches, 4 (2 boy and 2 girl) open-air shelters for sleeping, a working blacksmith shop and log barn, a lodge with a full kitchen and family-style dining hall, and a fully functioning bath house with showers. Our buildings were all built to form to the land. Only two of the six have power and water running to them. The gardens are used for teaching and supplementing our meals. We have used several different styles of organic gardening (from traditional Cherokee to bio-intensive) to provide examples to learn from. We continue to create more educational examples of sustainable and alternative technologies. Already we employ solar power for some lighting and cutting edge, high efficiency propane systems for our hot water.
