Earth Camp at Buffalo Cove
EARTH Camp is a tradition that began many years ago at a place called Silver Water, located in the high elevation Appalachians near Todd, North Carolina. The primary goal of EARTH Camp is to teach children how to live close to the Earth through using a wide range of earth skills and outdoor activities that promote connection and awareness. When EARTH Camp's home at Silver Water was no longer available, Buffalo Cove offered to bring EARTH Camp to the Buffalo Cove valley and keep the tradition going-with some new ideas in a new home!
CHARLEE Camp
The CHARLEE (Children Have All Rights: Legal, Educational, and Emotional) Program, a privatized foster care organization based in Florida, created BCOEC to serve CHARLEE foster children during summer and winter programs. In 2008 CHARLEE Camp teamed up with Educate Tomorrow, in order to offer camp opportunities to foster children throughout Miami-Dade county.
Two Rivers Mountain Adventure Program
In the fall and spring, Buffalo Cove serves as an experiential learning site for the Two Rivers Community School, a public expeditionary learning charter school located in Boone, NC. Students in grades 3-8 have the chance to come to Buffalo Cove for 2-3 day programs where the students' classroom turns into the wilderness.
Custom Programs - Designed Just For You and Your Group!
Buffalo Cove will work with pre-established groups (school groups, church groups, office groups, scouts, group of friends, families, etc.) to design the ideal outdoor experience for your group. Examples of such programs would be: a wilderness survival camp for a Boy Scout troop, group interaction activities for an office group, watershed study program for a high school science class or a canoe camping trip for your family. These types of programs are available year round depending on scheduling and the content of a desired program. Please contact us if you are interested in designing a custom program for your organization. All Proceeds from non-CHARLEE camp programs go towards funding our CHARLEE camp program.
Outreach and Education
Buffalo Cove offers outreach education programs which take place out of camp at local schools, community organizations, public landmarks etc. Our outreach programs bring the natural world into the front country setting. Participants in outreach programs gain valuable knowledge and skills during daytime workshops that offer some of the same activities offered in camp. This is our way of giving back to the community and providing a quality educational experience for the public.
Camp Waya
Buffalo Cove Outdoor Education Center (BCOEC) has been fortunate to have secured a Kennedy Foundation grant in the creation and offering of Camp WAYA: Woodland Adventure for Youth Alliance, to foster community, connection and confidence in local youth. Waya, the Cherokee word for wolf, is symbolic in that the wolf is a pack animal and the entire pack takes joy and responsibility in raising the young. This 6-day wilderness adventure camp aims to serve boys and girls from the North Carolina High Country who are lacking in community and/or family support.
Waya sessions are funding dependent - please check for available programs.
