Come learn how to safely and effectively enjoy a backcountry camping/adventure experience. We will cover the topics of shelter, water, hygiene, cooking,  and basic firecraft. We will look at high-tech and low-tech gear, old skills and new techniques. You will walk away with a set of skills and knowledge of how to be safe and use what works in the backcountry!

Backcountry Navigation Skills and Trailcraft: May 31, 2020

Session Details

Session Description

How do you get from here to there? In this session, we will learn some tried and true methods of how to find your way and how to find each other. Topics include: map and compass, direction-finding from nature, ancient trail signs, following the sign, and trail safety. We will not be using any devices that require batteries to navigate with!

Firecraft and Blade Use: June 6, 2020

Session Details

Session Description

Spend the day exploring the art of fire – a pillar of the human experience and necessary survival skill.  Learn many different methods of combustion, how to deal with wet wood, use fire for cooking, and how to utilize fire in creating other tools.  We will also incorporate the use of your knife and camp ax into the day.  Learn how to safely and effectively use and care for the quintessential backcountry sidekicks of traditional outdoor living.

Foraging and Wildcraft: June 7, 2020

Session Description

What does it look like to walk into your local natural area and gather food?  Come spend the day with us and find out!  We will explore our local great wild food plants, look at foraging options outside of the plant world, and philosophies of sustainability.  We will also learn to create a container from tree bark to carry your bounty home!

Session Description

This workshop will be jam packed!  We will dive into survival: mindset & philosophy, shelter, fire, water, getting rescued, proper prior preparation to avoid such a situation..  Your head will be swimming by the time 5 o'clock rolls around!

Intermediate Wilderness Survival: June 14, 2020

Session Details

Session Description

This day is more about hard skills and gear in the wilderness survival world. It will lean heavily on the concepts covered in the “basic” course. We will dive further into survival shelter and water gathering. We will look at survival blades, survival kits, food strategies, survival hunting, trapping, and more.

Blending and Flowing with the Natural World: June 20, 2020

Session Description

Are you tired of being an “outsider” when you step into the natural world? Do you hate to watch wildlife scamper away from you? Or would you like to just see the natural world in its natural state? How nice would it be to actually belong and not be a threatening presence? This workshop introduces you to the mindset, skills and techniques of how to close this gap, be a part of your surroundings, and attune your senses, too!

The Way of the Bow: Saturday, September 26th, 2020

Session Description

Have you ever wanted to develop the graceful skill of traditional archery?  Are you curious about how the bow and arrow are used for enjoyment, meditation, exercise, and making food? In this workshop, we will develop skill and technique based on instinctive archery, one of the most ancient methods of using these tools.  Once we develop a base of skill, we will further our understanding through games and activities centered around the bow!  Then, we will dive into how this traditional combo is used in hunting through an introduction of philosophy and techniques.

Session Description

Every season presents its own bounty – and challenges - when it comes to gathering wild foods. We will look at this season’s gifts from the plant world!  This day will focus on hard mast and roots of our valley: acorns, hickory nuts, and walnuts, along with a handful of calorie-filled roots. Along the way, we will learn some skills, tools, and techniques of the gatherer.

Survival Traps and Throwing Sticks: Sunday, November 8th, 2020

Session Details

- 10am-4pm

Session Description

A crux of survival in a crisis situation is securing enough calories for your group. On this day we will look as a few different tried and true methods of “making meat” when you might need it most!  We will explore different options and strategies for survival trapping and then spend time practicing and refining these techniques.  We will also create one of the oldest hunting and gathering tools: the “throw / dig” as we call it around Buffalo Cove.  Once we make them, we then (of course) will need to learn how to use them through games and drills!

Wilderness First Aid and Backcountry Crisis Management: Saturday, November 14th, 2020

Session Details

-10am - 4pm

Session Description

Spend the day exploring what happens when things don’t go as planned. We will teach a foundation in pertinent and valuable Wilderness First Aid skills, life-saving techniques, and basic management of common injuries. We will also learn how to avoid “getting into trouble” in the backcounty... and a few techniques that can really help you if trouble finds you anyway!  THIS IS NOT A CERTIFICATION CLASS.  This is a class to empower the individual through learning and practice of industry standard skills and techniques in back country medicine and rescue.

Turn animal hides into beautiful, usable, soft, and durable leather.  This is a day dedicated to the ancient skill of using an animal’s brains to tan their own hide.  No toxic chemicals or vats of poison here – just what the natural world gives us to facilitate the beautiful transformation of fresh skin to tanned leather.  We will be learning the “wet scrape” method of this art.

Basic River Rescue: June 27, 2020

Session Details

- 9am-5pm

Session Description

  Spend the day on the river with us in a fully-immersive experience into water dynamics and river rescue!  We will cover common hazards on our mountain rivers: how to anticipate them, recognize them, and deal with them.  We will look at rescue equipment, boat pinnings, entrapments, hands-on dynamic rescue techniques, and rope systems.  This course is geared for folks wanting to be safer and more educated while out on the river in up to class 3 white water.  This will be a moderately-strenuous day as we will be in fast moving water and actively engaged in scenarios for a good portion of the workshop!  This is NOT a certification course, but a course to increase your knowledge and efficacy in a river-rescue situation.

Basic River Canoing: July 18, 2020

Session Description

    Have you ever wanted to be more efficient and proficient in your canoeing skills?  To know what it feels like to “dance” with the water?  Spend the day on the river with us learning the art of tandem canoeing!  Learn how to best employ paddle strokes, work with your partner, and make that boat glide into your bidding.  We will also go into basic river safety and considerations when planning your own river trips.  Buffalo Cove will supply the boats and paddling equipment.  You just have to show up at the river for a day of fun and take your paddling to the next level!

Custom Family Workshops

Session Description

Is there a certain skill set or adventure you’d like your family to experience together?  Give us a shout and let’s see if we can design the perfect day afield with your special tribe!  We would love to offer some special 4-5 day long “family Camps” for parent/child learning and bonding. These experiences are dependent upon how the rest of our summer camp programming goes. Please let us know if your family would be interested. Prices will vary depending on the experience.  We love designing and implementing custom programs!
